Property Improvements
The Board invested in many improvements to the clubhouse in the off-season. Beyond new member initiation and annual dues, clubhouse rental is one of the only other sources of income for the club. We believe the continued improvements will increase interest in use of the clubhouse by club and non-club members. An entertainment package that includes a TV, surround sound, BluRay player and an iPod docking station has been installed. We also have the capability for laptop connectivity. In addition, we have updated the furniture to go along with the new entertainment capabilities. We encourage our members to consider using the clubhouse or sponsor rental by friends or relatives. The new possibilities for using the clubhouse are endless now such as small business meetings, slumber parties, watch parties for sporting events, and movie nights to name a few.
The pool is always a primary focus of our capital expenditures. The pool furniture continues to show its age over the past few years. This winter we replaced about a third of our inventory with more durable furniture. We expect to continue replacing the inventory with the newer style furniture and hope to fully replace all inventory within the next two to three years as budget allows. Several years ago we were forced to cut down a tree that was causing issues in the baby pool area. The lack of natural shade causes the sidewalk to be very hot on little ones' feet in this area. We have installed some cost effective shade opportunities for this year and we will continue to explore other options in the future based on feedback and additional funding becoming available. We also power washed and stained a substantial amount of the decking and sidewalks inside and outside the pool area.
We invested in resurfacing and repainting both sets of tennis courts about five years ago. One set of tennis courts (adjacent to the play area) was not totally resurfaced, but cracks were repaired and the surface was repainted. As expected, some cracks have started to resurface and we are working diligently with the tennis court contractor to ensure we minimize the expansion. We anticipate we will need to totally resurface this area within the next five years and have started a multi-year budgeting plan to account for the major cost in doing so. In the mean time we do not believe the current condition of the court affects play and will continue to monitor and stay in close contact with Gonzalo and our tennis team coordinators.
Our club is very excited to be hosting the Richmond Suburban Ladies Tennis League Annual Awards Luncheon at the Marriott Richmond West the first week in June. The theme for the luncheon is "For the Love of the Game" and will be highlighting good sportsmanship and the love of tennis. Awards will be given to all first place teams in each division. We are hoping for a good turn out from the Richmond Suburban League.
The club offers a variety of tennis teams, programs and social activities for adults and children. It is very casual tennis so please come out and have some fun! Clinic schedules are online at westendtennis.com. Clinics fill up fast so please sign up soon. The Colonies Ladies Suburban Teams are looking for more players. The Bantam league is for ages 12 and under and the Intermediate league is 16 and under. Please contact Lorraine Barlow at barlows8@verizon.net, if your child is interested in playing, if you are willing to captain a Junior team, or if you would like to join the Ladies Suburban Team.
If you have neighbors or friends who may be interested in joining the club please have them contact Robert Marks at rdm_va@yahoo.com.
We look forward to seeing everyone out enjoying the club.
